Abstract

Although there is a general consensus that tourism is nowadays one of the most dynamic economic activities worldwide, there are still many doubts about its social impacts. Tourism has rarely been examined as a tool for learning, despite offering opportunities to explore new environments and participate in new activities, with new people and new situations. These opportunities can provide tools that tourists need to initiate a process of learning – experiential learning. Additionally, few studies that analyze social tourism for low-income groups have been undertaken. In this context the aims of this paper are: first, based on a literature review, analyze the relationship between tourism and social exclusion; second, to discuss how the ideas from learning theories can be applied to tourist experiences, analyzing the particular case of low- income families.
