Abstract

In the last years we have seen a growing interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR). This happened in a context of globalisation with more opportunities and an increase of visibility for the corporations. At the same time, renewed social and labour claims occurred and also new pressures for the corporations related with the environmental issues, the consumer rights, the gender equality, etc. As a consequence, the traditional perception of the management about these subjects changed, and they are now seen as «strategic» for the corporation. Both the origins and evolution of the corporate social responsibility and the arguments of the critics against CSR are analysed in this paper. In a more deep approach, the idea of corporate social responsibility shows contradictory theoretical influences. We can also see, under a sophisticated form, a renewed confrontation between liberal capitalism and the social, the intellectual and the political movements against it.
